About Amboseli National Park

• Location: It is located in Kajiado County, Kenya.
• The park lies near the northern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak.
• Vegetation: The ecosystem comprises the dried-up Lake Amboseli basin, wetlands, sulphur springs, savannah, grasslands and woodlands, creating a diverse and scenic landscape.
• Unique Ecosystem: The Amboseli basin is a semi-arid ecosystem sustained by groundwater, springs and wetlands fed by Mount Kilimanjaro and the Chyulu Hills.
• Rich Biodiversity: The park supports around 400 bird species and a wide range of mammals, including elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, gazelles, lions, cheetahs, leopards and hyenas.
  • Land of Giants: Amboseli is particularly famous for its large elephant population and exceptionally large-tusked elephants, earning it the title “Land of Giants.”
• Tribe associated: The park is closely associated with the Maasai community, whose traditional pastoral practices have supported long-standing coexistence between people, livestock and wildlife.
• UNESCO Recognition: The Amboseli landscape was designated a UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Reserve in 1991, recognising its unique interaction between biodiversity, local communities and traditional livelihoods.
• Geological Significance: The ecosystem developed around a Pleistocene lake basin, with distinctive saline and alkaline soils shaped by its closed drainage system.
