News: The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has designated the Natural History Museum (NHM), Mizoram University, Aizawl, as a Designated Repository under Section 39 of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.

  • The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has designated the Natural History Museum (NHM), Mizoram University, Aizawl, as a Designated Repository.
  • About Designated Repository (DR): It is a safe deposit of holotypes or isotypes or paratypes of new taxa discovered in India and samples of biological resources accessed by foreign citizens or entities for research or sent/carried abroad by Indian citizens/institutions for research.
  • Designated by: Under Section 39 of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) is authorized to designate institutions as repositories for biological resources, in consultation with the Central Government.
  • Total Designated Repositories: India has 21 Designated Repositories.

About Natural History Museum (NHM), Mizoram

    • Establish year: It was established in 2022 under the aegis of Mizoram University.
    • It is uniquely positioned because of its location within the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot and its specialized taxonomic expertise.
    • Importance of designation: The designation advances National Biodiversity Target 4 of India’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (2024-2030) by strengthening ex situ conservation and the conservation of genetic diversity, in line with Target 4 of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
