News: India and China have started the process of disengagement at Depsang Plains and Demchok, two of seven friction points in Eastern Ladakh. This development comes after a military standoff at the LAC that lasted for more than four and a half years.

1. Demchok is a disputed area where India and China have varying claims in the Charding La area. While, at Depsang, Chinese troops have been blocking Indian patrols from going beyond the Y-junction.

2. These two friction points are regarded as legacy issues, where the dispute predates the 2020 Chinese incursions.

3. The disengagement process has started at these points after an agreement on patrolling had been recently reached between the two countries.

4. The two sides have started the process of dismantling the temporary structures like prefabricated sheds and tents that have been built since 2020 Galwan clashes.

6. Confidence building measures like regular ground commander level meetings are being held to ensure that the disengagement process is smooth and agreed terms of patrolling are put to the ground.

5. Other friction points in the Eastern Ladakh sectors include Galwan Valley, Gogra, Hot Springs, North and South banks of Pangong Tso.
