Disinvestment

Disinvestment is a process by which the government dilutes its stakes in a public sector enterprise.

This is done by selling its shares in the public enterprise to financial institutions, employees or the public at large.

It is primarily a money raising exercise. The Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) under the Ministry of Finance is the nodal department for disinvestment in the Public Sector Enterprises.
