The Focus Article of this Edition covers India’s Foreign Trade Policy 2023. The Policy has been declared after a significant delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic followed by the Russia-Ukraine War and associated geopolitical uncertainties. The Policy has underlined several measures to enhance exports with a focus on trade facilitation measures, process reforms and support to the MSMEs. However, critics argue that the Policy lacks a holistic approach towards trade. The Government should develop a long-term strategy to integrate India’s domestic Manufacturing and Services Industries with Global Value Chains (GVCs). We have provided a detailed analysis of the current status of India’s Merchandise and Services exports, the expected benefits and the shortcomings of the policy.
