The Focus Article of EPIC January 2024 covers the issue of Office of Governor. There have been several political controversies between the Governors and the respective State Governments in recent times. Most contentious issue has been inordinate delays by the Governors in providing assent to the Bills passed by the State Legislative Assemblies. Several States have approached the Supreme Court over the issue. Other controversies include Governor’s discretionary powers, power to call the Session of the Assembly, Governor’s Speech in the Assembly, or their role as Chancellors of State Universities etc. The role, powers and discretion of the Office of Governor have been subject of Constitutional, Political and Legal debate for long.
