The Focus Article of EPIC July 2023 covers the Status of R&D in India and the National Research Foundation. Last year, on the occasion of India’s 75th Independence Day, the Prime Minister had pledged to make India a developed country by 2047. New innovations tailor-made to address the unique challenges faced by India will be a vital lever in achieving the milestone. However, India has lacked a robust domestic R&D Ecosystem. The announcement by the Government to establish the National Research Foundation (NRF) is expected to alter the status-quo and push India to the forefront of most innovative economies. The NRF will have its task cut out to establish a sustainable R&D ecosystem to address the most pressing challenges across sectors like affordable energy transition amidst worsening climate change, green mobility, stagnant productivity of the economy etc.
