Here’s the 49th Edition of the EPIC Magazine!
The Focus Article of EPIC May 2024 covers the issue of Supreme Court’s Judgment on the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). Several NGOs and some opposition parties had raised concerns about the integrity of the EVMs and the electoral process. They had petitioned before the Supreme Court for the discontinuation of the use of EVMs and shift back to the paper ballot system. The Supreme Court heard the objections and the arguments of both the parties (NGOs/Election Commission of India (ECI)) in detail.
The SC has expressed faith in the procedures established by the Election Commission and has refused to shift to the system of paper ballots. In addition, the SC has refused for 100% verification of the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) slips and has retained the standard of verification of VVPAT slips for 5 EVMs per Assembly constituency or Assembly segment in a Parliamentary constituency. The SC has asked for some additional safeguards to make the electoral process more robust and transparent. We have discussed the issue in detail.
