The Focus Article of EPIC November 2023 covers the issue of Electoral Bonds and the State Funding of Elections. The Supreme Court has heard several petitions challenging the validity of electoral bonds and has reserved the verdict. The Government has maintained that the electoral bonds have brought more transparency to electoral funding. However, objections have been raised against the bond scheme on several issues like violation of ‘Right to Know‘, information asymmetry and the method of legislation. The final verdict of the Supreme Court is awaited. In this context, State Funding of Elections assumes importance. Several experts have advocated for state funding to check the increasing use of money and muscle power in winning elections; and provide a more level-playing field for all candidates. This can ensure free and fair elections. We have discussed both the issues in detail.
