Here’s the 42nd Edition of the EPIC Magazine!
The Focus Article of EPIC October 2023 covers Gender Issues. Ms. Claudia Goldin of the Harvard University has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics, 2023. She did a pioneering work highlighting key gender differences in the labour market. Women in labour force face multiple discriminations like wage gaps, glass ceiling effect, motherhood penalty among others all of which limit their ability to contribute to the economic growth. Hence, Ms. Goldin’s work has become the fundamental basis for focused interventions by the Governments to make workplaces more sensitive to gender concerns and address the biases faced by women.
The gender biases are not limited to the workplaces. For instance, a Lancet report has found that ~63% cancer-related deaths of women in India are preventable, but happen nevertheless because of poor access and awareness regarding healthcare among women. On a similar note, women continue to be underrepresented in the State Police Forces. It may be one of the contributing factor in high crime rate against women. Although, State Governments are promoting entry of the women in police forces, but the approach has been piecemeal with wide disparities across the States.
