Preparation Strategy of Gunjita Agrawal IAS Rank 26 | UPSC 2022

Gunjita Agarwal has recommended the following strategy for Ethics.

Strategy for Case Studies by Gunjita Agarwal

TIME MANAGEMENT is the key, and we keep hearing this. But how to achieve this?

1) Maintaining time limit. Strict limits of 7 min for theory and around 14 minutes for case studies (Towards the end I completed 2-3 case studies in 8-9 minutes each also – your writing and thinking speed both increase so you will tend to speed up).

2) Underlining in the first reading itself the keywords (what is your role, what is the key issue, stakeholders, relevant details which can be used by you in solution)

3) Please answer all parts of the question in the sequence asked, and clearly label the part of the question you are answering in the margin. E.g. in 2022, ethical dilemmas were asked as 4th part, but we are used to writing it as 2nd part.

4) Avoid the urge to go by pre-defined structure. UPSC is defining the structure by giving clear 4-5 questions, so try answering those completely with as many points and example as you can.

5) You can have ready templates for solutions/ethical issues/ ethical dilemmas. These will help you quickly create options and write the merits and demerits. This will also help you bring variety even in similar looking case studies because you will already have content in mind.

Key Points for Marks Enhancement in Ethics by Gunjita Agarwal:

1) PLEASE BREAK DOWN QUESTIONS into structure. Even the quote-based questions will have clear sub parts apart from intro & conclusion. This helps you to write efficient and quick points; I imagine it to also help examiner, since answers look presentable and PRESENTATION MATTERS!

2) USE EXAMPLES efficiently. This I think worked for me because I have used examples to back almost every point I was writing. (Example sheet is below)

3) Using flash cards for values or keywords to remember definitions and examples on tips. If there are some flow charts or diagrams you can remember like this, it will be a value addition (Examples of flash cards below)

4) If time permits, try making lists of examples, philosophies, different thinkers and their theories (PDF’s below).

In those 2 hours between GS 3 & GS 4, you can easily revise these. This will help you recall content under time pressure and also use limited content in different questions effectively.

5) Preparation wise, decide a time frame (E.g. 40 days for a beginner) and then try making all your notes in that period for ethics. After that, just practice, practice and practice writing!

6) For scoring high marks, nothing beats completing the paper.
