Preparation Strategy of UPSC Topper Mayur Hazarika

During his UPSC preparation, the 26-year-old managed to balance his responsibilities at a hospital in Nagaon district as part of his rural posting under the National Health Mission. Given his limited availability due to work commitments, he heavily relied on self-study, but he found the online classes particularly valuable for dynamic subjects like economics, science and technology, and current affairs.

His preparation strategy was well-structured.

For the UPSC Prelims, he meticulously selected credible, high-quality sources and emphasized multiple rounds of revision.

However, when it came to the mains, he focused on adding substantial value through statistics, data, government schemes, and anecdotes.

Mayur’s choice of optional subject was Anthropology, with the physical anthropology section complementing his medical knowledge and the social anthropology section assisting with general studies compulsory topics.

Speaking about his interview experience, he highlighted his preference for the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), which led to a substantial portion of his interview revolving around International Relations (IR). The chairwoman led discussions on topics like the Global South, India’s relationships with neighboring countries, nuclear diplomacy, medical diplomacy, the Right to Health Bill, and the New Education Policy.

Mayur’s study schedule was adaptable due to his work commitments, with approximately 5-6 hours of study time before the UPSC Prelims and 8-9 hours afterward.

Although his tight schedule allowed for limited mock tests, he made the most of them and meticulously analyzed model answers to enhance his knowledge—a testament to his dedication and focus that ultimately resulted in his remarkable achievement as AIR 5.

Based on his own experiences, Mayur Hazarika offers three valuable pieces of advice to UPSC aspirants: develop self-confidence and mental resilience, stay disciplined and committed to the journey, and work hard while employing smart study techniques.
