Economically Weaker Sections (EWSs)

About EWS:

  • The Constitution (103rd) Amendment Act 2019 provides for the creation of the special EWS quota for reservation in employment and educational institutions.
    • The act inserted clauses 15(6) and 16(6) in the Constitution.
  • It EWS quota provides 10% reservation to people over and above the existing reservations.
  • It was granted based on the recommendations of a commission headed by Major General (retd) SR Sinho.
  • It enables both Centre and the states to provide reservation to the EWS category people.

Eligibility criteria:

  • People who are not covered under the existing reservations for BCs, SCs, STs and whose gross annual family income is below Rs 8 lakh per annum.

Exclusion criteria: persons whose family owns or possesses any of the following assets shall be excluded

  • 5 acres of Agricultural Land and above;
  • Residential flat of 1000 sq. ft. and above;
  • Residential plot of 100 sq. yards and above in notified municipalities;
  • Residential plot of 200 sq. yards and above in areas other than the
    notified municipalities.
