Life and liberty is meant to mean a person has the right to life and freedom–

Liberty follows from human nature: We are unique individuals, not a blob or an army of robots to be programmed by those with power. Individual liberty is extremely important to any society. It protects individuals from the tyranny of the majority. It establishes a base level of intellectual, philosophical, spiritual, and economic diversity that ensures that there is enough free play of ideas in a society for the best solution to shine through.

FOR EXAMPLE–There was a time when Women could not VOTE & deprive of EDUCATION and were relatively voiceles or SLAVERY SYSTEM were prevalent in ANCIENT INDIA.Rarely the feeling of liberty was there. This is why individual liberty is so important and often thought of as having intrinsic value

High levels of liberty lead to more contented citizens–Liberty Violates when someone else interfere with it.When people feel they can freely express themselves, they feel more contented, taking more risk artistically i e writing books on philosophy, art, religion and theory without having to worry about the government stepping in to muzzle them. They don’t feel frustrated. They don’t feel bottled up. They don’t feel ‘held down.’ The sky is the limit in terms of artistic expression. When people are exposed to the free artistic and cultural expression of their fellow citizens, they feel at ease. They feel contented. They feel they truly have the opportunity to focus on the finer things in life. They get the opportunity to focus on things that go beyond and go higher than simple raw existence.

Freedom leads to more stable societies: Freedom is a very precious condition without which neither the state nor the individuals can make any progress. We remember very well how cruelly the absolute monarchs ignored the claims of liberty in ancient and medieval ages. These absolute monarchs did not pay any attention to the liberty of the individuals and acted according to their will. But people could no longer tolerate it. They rose in revolt and continued their struggle against the absolute monarchy of these cruel rulers till they got their freedom

When governments give a proper forum for dissenting voices, the society as a whole is more stable because people and dissenting groups don’t feel so disaffected, marginalized, or suppressed.Instead of taking up arms, heading for the hills, and waging guerilla war against the central government, disaffected people can take to the airwaves. They can take out ads, and they can participate in the political discourse.

Free societies lead to better economies:When A person enjoys economic liberty ,This leads to better economies. When there are more choices in a market, there is a tendency for lower prices at higher quality levels for products and services. When individual liberties against government control, monopolization, and standardization are protected, individuals are encouraged to experiment and offer different products and services which can benefit society as a whole since there are more choices available. The more choices people have, the better for the economy.

Disadvantage Of Positive Liberty–Too much LIBERTY can allow you to infringe on the freedom of another person. This often takes the form of endangering the person’s safety, which is a violation of his right to be safe and protected
FOR EXAMPLE–you’re allowed to drink as much alcohol as you want. You have the freedom to drink because it harms no one but you. However, have the choice to harm others; thus, you are not allowed to drive drunk. By doing so, your right to drive drunk might endanger another’s right to live unharmed.

If everyone had unlimited liberty or freedom, there would be no protections. For Example-Murder,Rape,Robbery etc
We as members of a society agree to give up certain freedoms in exchange for safety. This is the social contract.

By liberty, therefore we mean freedom to do everything provided it does not injure the freedom of others. It implies necessary restraint on all in order to ensure the greatest possible amount of liberty for each. Liberty, in this sense, can be maximised only when there is mutual respect and goodwill and all follow a simple rule of social behaviour:

Even I wanted to compare recent issue of liberty for driving for women in Saudi Arabia with India, I should add more recent and social stuff in my essay rather than bookish stuff. Thank u for motivating me for writing.

I don’t think, it is easy anything in upsc. I know u think that why I chose literature.?? There are many challenges in my life. From my childhood I wanted to study to fulfill my dream of IAS. But my family think that I should not see such big dreams. I didnt even clear my graduation.they force me for marriage, though my parents love me very much. and I get married and leave my dream forever. After marriage everything is so nice, he but something is empty in my life . I was going to hate such routine activities, I was tired with social problems. And then I got depression . I m still lucky to have support of person to whom I married. Finally he told me to start study again, and I cleared graduation as external from IGNOU. I started my prep from Jan 2017. As house wife I have other duties as well. And also i cannot attend any class . Also have 4 years old boy who is very naughty. I know it seems story to u. But this is miracle for me , that God have given me another chance to prove my self.

I appreciate your courage…..
But what I am trying to say that a person can take a literature optional if he/she has literature paper in graduation. Since you have completed graduation in Pol Science, which is not literature, So I raised the doubt. Therefore, I suggest you to consult the UPSC guidelines for taking the optional paper.

Government;s First Duty Is To Protect The People,Not Run Their Lives—

As citizens of the India, and as people living under a democracy, the government has certain responsibilities to us. We are guaranteed union, justice, tranquility, defense, welfare, and liberty. These rights are all very important to the well being of our country and the states that exist in

What Justifies Government Power–
Maintenace Of Law and Order–It Is The Prime Duty Of The Government To Keep The Society Intact and In Peace.Maintenance Of Law and Order Is Ensured Through POLICE,ARMED FORCES and The Courts By Protecting The Liberties Of Individuals Living Within The Society and Punishing Offenders Of The Law.This Ensures The Enjoyment Of The Right To Life .
Justice is a vital part of governmental systems. Justice is a way to control the activities of citizens without infringing on their rights. Without justice, the acts of the citizens living under a government could not be very well controlled. No one would want to live under a government under which they have no freedom and are controlled. The protection of the people should be in high priority of the government. The government is there to serve the people and make life better for everyone. If they don’t protect the people then there is no point in the government.

The Economy–A capitalist “market economy” is ideally controlled by buyers and sellers, with the government staying out of things. However, most people today expect their governments to take action to promote national prosperity and quality of life. At the minimum, this might just mean refereeing the system to ensure fairness and competition, but it can also involve protecting local businesses, creating jobs, or other measures to actively stabilize and grow the economy. In a communist or fully socialist system, the government is expected to take charge by planning economic growth and running major industries itself

Social Services–Governments are almost always expected to provide basic services to their citizens, such as building roads and fighting fires, but they sometimes offer much more. To ensure basic well-being for their citizens, many governments provide assistance such as food, housing and medical care to those in need. This is a basic government service in socialist or social democratic systems, but can be controversial

Hence,The government is assigned the duty of impartial umpire, enforcing the societal rules against assault, murder, robbery, and fraud. All human relationships are to be based on mutual consent and voluntary association and exchange.

However, citizens are also obligated to take care of themselves It is not the governments job to take care of you, that is your responsibility. In most cases, the government will try to guide your actions. It will remind you to pay your taxes, provide timely health warnings and update you on upcoming elections. Your civil duties also include being aware of national issues, discussing those issues and working with others towards a common solution. Your main responsibility is forwarding the goals of the government. In most government, you often have a small part in deciding what the goals are or least electing the people who will decide the goals.

Government is thus an active player in people’s affairs, using its legitimized power of coercion to determine how the members of the society may live, work, and associate with each other and make sure that citizen’s rights aren’t infringed upon by others or the government itself.

Personal view:
Liberty is like rain – adequately required and should be thoroughly distributed to life span, Then only the bushel of life gets green and sparked. Higher dose may flood the life into drain and its scarcity strangleholds the happiness and captivates the soul.
