News: Anti-corruption watchdog Lokpal has asked SEBI’s Chief to explain the conflict-of-interest charges levelled against her in three separate complaints that cited a recent report from the U.S.- based shortseller firm, Hindenburg Research.

1. Lokpal is an anti-corruption authority established under the provisions of the Lokpal and Lokayukta Act, 2013.

2. The institution of the Lokpal is at the national level. Whereas the Lokayukta is present at the state level.

3. It is a multi-member body consisting of a chairperson and up to 8 members.

4. The Lokpal has jurisdiction to investigate corruption cases involving the Prime Minister, Ministers, Members of Parliament, officers and officials of the central government.

5. It has powers to investigate cases of corruption, recommend the prosecution of guilty individuals, powers of confiscation of assets, proceeds, receipts and benefits arisen or procured by means of corruption in special circumstances etc.

6. Other legal and institutional measures to tackle corruption: A) Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 B) Central Vigilance Commission C) Right to Information Act, 2005 D) CBI and ED
