Explained: Why September is drier than usual

News

  1. The 2018 September has been the driest September since 2001

Important Facts:

2. According to IMD, September 2018 would end with more than 30% rainfall deficiency

3. South India has experienced a rainfall deficiency of over 46%.

Causes:

4. Lack of development of strong Low Pressure Systems– According to meteorologists, the reason behind lack of strong low pressure system developing over the Bay of Bengal is the development of a cyclonic activity in west Pacific region. As a result, moisture over the Bay of Bengal got sucked in by those systems.

5. Meteorologists have ruled out the role of El-Nino behind the lower rainfall

Note:

El Nino: It is a climate cycle in which warm water in the western tropical Pacific Ocean shifts eastward along the equator toward the coast of South America. Thus, warm ocean surface waters develop along the coast of Ecuador and Peru. El Nino has a global impact on weather patterns
