Fires are a crucial component of some forest systems: says group of scientists

  1. A group of scientists have advocated that forest fires are crucial components of some forest systems and forms an important tool for forest management. The National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), India defines forest fire as an unclosed and freely spreading fire that consumes the natural fuels. Forest fires can be caused by both natural (e.g. Lightning) and anthropogenic factors (e.g. negligent use of fire, shifting cultivation etc.)
  2. Scientists have highlighted the positive impact of forest fires such as a) Cleaning up forests of dead and decaying matter and help forests to regenerate, b) Maintaining ecosystem balance by removing diseased plants and harmful insects, c) help in reviving dormant seeds of many species, d) help supress invasive species, e) controlled fires can help prevent and reduce the impact of large fires.
