Introduction:

  • Forest Survey of India(FSI) was founded in June 1981.
  • It is under the administration of Government of India, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change

Objective:

  • Conducts forest surveys, studies and research to periodically monitor the changing situation of land and forest resources and present the data for national planning, conservation and sustainable management of environmental protection as well for the implementation of social forestry projects.

Features:

  • FSI assesses forest cover of the country every 2 years.
  • It uses digital interpretation of remote sensing satellite data and publishes the results in a biennial report called ‘State of Forest Report'(SFR).

Other national survey organisations:

  • FSI (forests) as well as ASI (archaeology), BSI (botany), FiSI (fisheries), GSI (geology), IIEE (ecology), NIO (oceanography), RGCCI (population survey) and language survey), SI (cartography) and ZSI (zoology) are key national survey organisations of India.
