Furlough

Furlough is a  type of conditional release which aims to balance offender’s rights with that of society. Offenders must adhere to the terms of the order authorizing furlough or parole, such as periodic reporting to a local police station.

  • Parole can be awarded in the case of short-term detention. 
  • It is allowed in the case of long-term detention.  
  • It, usually, lasts for one month 
  • It, usually, lasts for a maximum of 14 days.  
  • A specific justification for parole is necessary 
  • It is intended to break the monotony of imprisonment.  
  • It can be given multiple times 
  • It has a limit.  
  • It can be denied even when the prisoner makes out a sufficient case, if the competent authority is satisfied that releasing the convict would not be in the interest of society.  
  • It can also be denied in the interest of society because it is not granted for any specific reason. 
  • It is granted by the Divisional Commissioner. 
  • It is granted by the Deputy Inspector General of Prisons.
