News: A major highlight of the G20 Leaders’ Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was the official launch of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty.

1. A landmark event in the fight against hunger and poverty was the adoption of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by all 193 UN member states in 2015.

2. The Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 1 aims to eradicate extreme poverty for all people by 2030. While the SDG 2 envisages a world free of hunger by 2030.

3. However, the pandemic, global conflicts, climate change have led to a rise in extreme poverty and fall in nutritional standards.

4. To sustain the fight against hunger and poverty, Brazil has championed the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty.

5. The alliance serves as a platform where countries support each other’ public policies aimed at eradicating hunger and poverty. The support may be in the form of technical or financial assistance.

6. The alliance has been joined by 81 countries, including India, 26 international organisations, 9 financial institutions, and 31 philanthropic and non-governmental organisations.

7. The evidence-based policy basket of the alliance comprises of more than 50 policy instruments. Amongst them, the six Sprints 2030 are of high importance.

8. The alliance is likely to be headquartered in Brasilia or some other country of the global south.
