Hampi to Gangtok: UDAN spreads wings, travel and tourism traffic soars

The civil aviation Ministry has been working with Tourism Ministry to connect popular tourist spots by flights under the UDAAN scheme

- Hampi in Karnataka, Gangtok in Sikkim, Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand and Shimla in Himachal Pradesh are examples of tourist destinations that have been connected with flight under the UDAAN Scheme
- Evidences suggest, the improved connectivity has helped expand tourism by pulling tourists to destinations that were previously difficult to reach because they required extended road or rail journeys.
- For example: according to DGCA data, the Kolkata-Pakyong-Kolkata route, which started in early October 2018, saw 4,790 passengers during October and November 2018
- UDAN Phase III that is in the final stages of implementation has listed 60 tourism routes including Bikaner-Jaisalmer-Jodhpur-Udaipur, Ahmedabad-Bhuj-Porbandar-Rajkot among others
