Why in news?
Recently, India and Algeria signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen their bilateral defence partnership. The MoU aims to foster mutual understanding and enhance strategic interests.
About the pact
1. This agreement is part of a broader endeavor to deepen India-Algeria relations, enhancing diplomatic, military, and strategic ties between the two nations.
2. Areas of Cooperation:
i) Military Training and Knowledge Sharing: Emphasis on training and experience-sharing between the Indian Armed Forces and the Algerian People’s National Army.
ii) Defence Production and Technology: Support for India’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Make for the World’ initiatives, enabling joint production and technology transfer.
iii) Space Science Collaboration: Enhanced cooperation in space sciences and technology, with India sharing advancements in this sector.
3. Reopening of Defence Wings: India has re-established its Defence Wing in Algeria, with Algeria planning to reopen its Defence Wing in India, strengthening institutional collaboration.
4. Shared Strategic Vision: Both countries reaffirm their commitment to peaceful resolutions to conflicts, respect for sovereignty, and support in multilateral settings, rooted in their shared history through the Non-Aligned Movement.
5. Regional and Global Cooperation: India and Algeria, as influential countries in South Asia and North Africa, aim to promote a multipolar world, contributing to a balanced global order.
