News: Russia’s top diplomat has remarked that India, Brazil and African countries should be represented in the UN Security Council on a permanent basis to ensure the representativeness of the global majority.

1. United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, with its primary responsibility being maintenance of international peace and security.

2. It consists of 15 Members- 5 Permanent Members (having veto powers) and 10 Non-Permanent Members (with no veto power).

4. Each year, UN General Assembly elects 5 non-permanent members for a two-year term by a two-third majority.

5. The presidency of the council is held by each of the members in turn for one month, following the English alphabetical order of the Member States names.

6. It is headquartered in the New York City, United States.

7. UNSC reforms are also being demanded by G4 nations, comprising Brazil, Germany, India and Japan.
