An analysis by research agency Itihaasa, has ranked India third in the world in terms of high quality research publications in artificial intelligence (AI)

Methodology of the analysis:

1. The agency had computed the number of citable documents in the field of AI between 2013 and 2017 as listed out by Scimago.

Observations

1. China ranked first with 37, 918 documents followed by the United States with 32,421 documents and India with 12,135 documents
2. When analysed by taking into account the number of times an article is referenced (citations), India ranked only fifth, behind the United Kingdom, Canada, the U.S. and China.
3. The Indian Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institutes of Information Technology were among the key centres for AI research.
4. The article observes that India must work at improving the quality of its research output in AI
