News: India Skills Report 2019-20 has been released

Facts:

  • India Skills Report is a joint initiative of Wheebox (a global talent-assessment company), Taggd by PeopleStrong and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in collaboration with UNDP, AICTE, and AIU.

Key takeaways:

  • About 46.21% of students were found employable in 2019.
  • The most employable candidates as per the courses were MBA Students at 54%.
  • Among the States, Maharashtra ranked first in terms of employability.
  • Mumbai followed by Hyderabad was ranked the top two employable cities.

GoI schemes for Skill Development

1.       National Skill Development Mission (2015): It aims to create convergence across sectors and States in terms of skill training activities.

2.       Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY): It was launched by The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) in 2015. The objective of this scheme is to enable a large number of Indian youth to take up industry-relevant skill training that will help them in securing a better livelihood. It is implemented through National Skill Development Corporation

3.       Skills Acquisition and Knowledge Awareness for Livelihood Promotion (SANKALP): Launched in it is an outcome-oriented project supported by World Bank. Under the scheme, four key result areas have been identified viz: (i) Institutional Strengthening; (ii) Quality Assurance; (iii) Inclusion; and (iv) Expanding Skills through PPPs.

4.       Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana: It was launched by the Ministry of Rural Development in 2014. It aims to transform rural poor youth into an economically independent and globally relevant workforce
