News: As part of the Seva Sankalp initiative, the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) organised a stakeholder consultation on Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) and emergency preparedness at Lonavala and Bhushi Dams.

About Indrayani River

  • Indrayani River is a rain-fed river through Maharashtra.
  • Origin: It originates at Kurvande village near Lonavala, in the North Western Ghats and flows towards east to meet Bhima River near Tulapur, Pune.
  • Length: It covers a total distance of 105.3 km.
  • Tribuatary of: It is a tributary of the Bhima River.
  • Associated Pilgrimage sites: It flows through two pilgrimage centres namely Dehu and Alandi, so it is respected as a sacred river which related with great Saints such as Saint Tukaram Maharaj and Dnyaneshwar Maharaj. 
  • It also passes through the industrial town of Pimpri-Chinchwad.
  • Associated Dam: Valvan dam, Lonavala and Bhushi Dam are situated on the river and its tributaries.

About Lonavala Dam and Bhushi Dam

  • Lonavala Dam and Bhushi Dam both are situated within the Indrayani River system.
  • They were constructed in late 1860s for the Great Indian Peninsular Railway as a wellspring of water for their steam motors.
    • Water from the dam was conveyed to Lonavala, Khandala and the switching station of the railroads by cast-press funnels.
  • Bhusi Dam  collects water from the Indrayani River and its tributaries and releases it through a series of steps that create a waterfall-like effect.
