News: While responding to a Right to Information (RTI) application, Ministry of Home Affairs said that information on applicants who became Indian citizens under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 is not readily available.
1. Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019: This Act amended the Citizenship Act, 1955 to fast-track Indian citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians who migrated to India, on or before December 31, 2014, owing to religious persecution in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
2. This act also reduces the residency requirement for the above-mentioned groups to apply for Indian citizenship from 11 years to 5 years.
3. To facilitate the provisions of the act, central government has notified the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024.
4. Right to Information Act, 2005: It was enacted in 2005 to empower citizens to request information from public authorities, thereby ushering in transparency and accountability in governance.
5. Under the RTI Act, public authorities are required to respond to RTI requests within 30 days. If the information concerns the life and liberty of a person, then the response time is 48 hours.
