Why in the news?

The Indian Navy’s INS Sumitra has recently rescued fishermen hijacked by pirates along the east coast of Somalia and the Gulf of Aden.

About INS Sumitra

1) It is the fourth and last Saryu-class patrol vessel of the Indian Navy.
2) It is indigenously designed and constructed by Goa Shipyard Limited.
3) It was used in “Operation Rahat” in 2015 to rescue 350 Indian citizens stranded in Yemen.

2) Borders:  In the North– Yemen, In the South– Somalia and Socotra Island (Part of Yemen), In the East– Arabian Sea, In the West– Djibouti
3) It is connected to the Red Sea on the west by the Strait of Bab-el Mandeb.
4) It is a critical part of the Suez Canal shipping route, which connects the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.
