AboutIt is a national-level, community-driven campaign to conserve water and recharge groundwater.

It builds on Gujarat’s Jal Sanchay experience and scales it through Centre–State collaboration.

AimIts aims is to promote community-driven water conservation and groundwater recharge efforts across India.
Launched byThe initiative was launched by Prime Minister on September 6, 2024, in Surat, Gujarat.
Ministry involved Ministry of Jal Shakti ( led by the Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation)
Approach TakenIt is driven by a whole-of-society and a whole-of-government approach
Key Aspects
  • Community empowerment: Social and community participation drives transformative change in water conservation and groundwater recharge.
  • Recharge focus: Special emphasis on artificial recharge structures and borewell recharge shafts to increase storage and augment groundwater.
  • On-ground works: The initiative includes the construction of small check dams, gabion structures, gully plugs, percolation ponds, soak pits, taankas, and stepwells, as well as desilting undertaken under MGNREGA.
  • Recognition mechanism: District-level awards under Jal Shakti Abhiyan
“Catch the Rain”It is a convergence of various Central Government schemes and funds like MGNREGS, AMRUT, Per Drop More Crop, Repair, PMKSY, CAMPA etc.
