J&K-based Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen banned: MHA

  1. The home ministry has banned Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention)(UAPA) Act, which has been operating in the Kashmir Valley for promoting terrorism and other subversive activities.
  2. UAPA is anti-terrorist law aimed at effective prevention of unlawful activities, associations in India.Its main objective is to make powers available for dealing with activities directed against integrity and sovereignty of India.
  3. It bans certain terrorist associations, punishes membership and terrorist activities.It deprives the accused of the right to bail and this made them to live long under detention.
  4. Crime under the Act are: (a) To support any secessionist movement (b) To support a foreign power’s claim over Indian territories (c) Threatening economic security of India (d) Raising funds for terrorist activities and (e) Member of unlawful associations or terrorist gang or terrorist organisation.
