News: The district administration’s search and rescue operation to evacuate trekkers and support staff stranded in the Kedar Tal region of Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district remained underway.
About Kedar Tal

- Kedartal is a high-altitude glacial lake in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand.
- Fed by: The lake is fed by the snowfall over Mt Thalay Sagar (6,904m), Meru (6,672m), Mt Bhrigupanth (6,772m) and other surrounding peaks, which are also the source of Kedar Ganga, which in Hindu mythology is considered to be Lord Shiva’s contribution to Bhagirathi (a source-stream of the Ganges).
- Height: It is situated at an elevation of 15,580 to 16,000 feet.
- Appearance: It is known for its crystal-clear, blue and cold waters, surrounded by snow-covered mountains.
- It is a popular trekking destination in the Garhwal Himalayas.
- The trek starts from Gangotri and follows the Kedar Ganga gorge to Bhojkharak, then continues to Kedarkharak before reaching Kedartal.
- The trail passes through scenic Himalayan birch (Betula utilis) forests.
