News: The police ended a 15-day protest against the Ken–Betwa Link Project and other proposed development projects in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhatarpur district by clearing the protest site and sending the demonstrators back to their villages.
About Ken River

- It is a major river of the Bundelkhand region of central India.
- States through which it flows: It is an interstate river between Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
- Origin and course of the river: It originates on the northwest slopes of the Kaimur Hills in Madhya Pradesh and flows for 430 km through the Katni, Panna and Chhatarpur districts in Madhya Pradesh, and Mahoba, Banda and Hamirpur districts in Uttar Pradesh.
- It joins the Yamuna river near village Chilla near Fatehpur in Uttar Pradesh.
- It is the last tributary of Yamuna before the Yamuna joins the Ganga.
- Length: The total length of the river is 427 km.
- Tributaries: Major tributaries of Ken River include the Sonar, Bearma, Bagain, Urmil and Khudar.
- Tribuatary of: It is a tributary of the Yamuna River.
- Minerals: Shazar stone is found exclusively in the Ken River in the Banda district of India.
- Ecological Importance: It flows through Panna National Park, which is part of the larger Panna Biosphere Reserve, designated by UNESCO under its Man and the Biosphere Programme.
- It is home to the Critically Endangered gharial, Vulnerable mugger crocodile, endangered Gangetic river dolphin, endangered magur catfish, near Threatened Indian mottled eel., etc.
- Cultural significance: The river is locally known as Karnavati. It holds an important place in regional folklore and flows past the scenic Pandav Falls, which are traditionally linked to legends from the Mahabharata.
- Hydrological Project: The Ken-Betwa link project envisages diversion of surplus water of Ken basin to water short areas of Betwa basin by substitution.
About Betwa River
- It is an interstate river the flows between Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
- Origin: The Betwa river originates in the Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh near Barkhera village south-west of Bhopal.
- Course of river: It flows in a northeasterly direction through Madhya Pradesh and enters into Uttar Pradesh near village Bangawan of Jhansi district.
- Tributary of: It joins the Yamuna near Hamirpur in Uttar Pradesh at an elevation of about 106 m.
- Length: The total length of the river from its origin to confluence with the Yamuna is 590 km.
- Tributaries: Some of the important tributaries are Bina, Jamini, Dhasan, Birma, Kaliasote, Halali, Bah, Saga, Narain and Kaithan.
