  • Location: Mongolia is a landlocked country located in East Asia.
  • Bordering nations: It is bordered by two nations: China to the south and Russia to the north.
    • However, it is only 37 km from Kazakhstan, but does not share a border with it.
  • Area: It has an area of 1,564,116 sq. km. 
  • Capital: Its capital, Ulaanbaatar, is in the north-central part of the country.
  • Climate: It has a continental climate, with long cold winters and short cool-to-hot summers.
  • Terrain: It features vast areas of upland steppes, semideserts, and deserts.
  • Desert: The Gobi Desert lies across southern Mongolia and northwestern China.
    • It is the largest desert in Asia and the fifth largest in the world.
  • Mountains: There are three major mountain chains in Mongolia –
    • The Mongolian Altai Mountains
    • The Khangai Mountains
    • The Khentii Mountains
  • Highest point: The highest point of Mongolia is Nayramadlin Orgil at 14,350 ft. (4,374 m), found in the rugged Atlay Mountains of the west.
  • Rivers:  The Orkhon River is the longest river in Mongolia.
    • Kherlen River and Tuul River are other important rivers in Mongolia.
  • Lakes: Hovsgol Nuur, one of Asia’s largest freshwater lakes, is located on its border with the Russia.
      • Hovsgol Nuur is also the second-most voluminous in Asia and contains nearly 70% of Mongolia’s freshwater.
  • Mongolia experiences frequent earthquakes in its western and northern regions, though its volcanoes are regarded as extinct.
