Location
  • It is a country situated in the Horn of Africa (large peninsula and geopolitical region in East Africa).
  • The Equator passes through southern Somalia.
Surrounding borders
  • It is bordered by Ethiopia to the west, Djibouti to the northwest, Gulf of Aden to the north, Indian Ocean to the east and Kenya to the southwest.
Capital
  • Its capital is Mogadishu.
Climate
  • It has an arid or semiarid climate, and there is little seasonal change in temperature.
Geographical Features
  • Terrain: Its terrain features plenty of plateaus and highlands.
  • Somali peninsula: The Somali peninsula consists mainly of a tableland of young limestone and sandstone formations.
    • In the extreme north, along the Gulf of Aden, is a narrow coastal plain called the Guban, which broadens northward toward the port of Berbera
    • Highlands:To the south are the broad plateaus of the Galgodon (or Ogo) Highlands and the Sool and Hawd regions, which drop gradually southward toward the Indian Ocean.
  • In southern Somalia the crystalline bedrock outcrops to the south of Baydhabo (Baidoa) in the shape of granite formations called inselbergs.
  • Mountain: Cal Madow is a mountain range in the northeastern part of the country.
    • Highest Point: Shimbiris, also known as Surud Cad, in the far north of Somalia, is the its highest point at 8070 feet above sea level.
  • Rivers: The Jubba River and the Shebelle River are the only perennial river systems in Somalia.
  • Coastline: It has the longest coastline on Africa’s mainland.
