News: A new study has found that a majority of ornamental plants sold online, like lantana camara, in India are alien species, many of which are known to be invasive or naturalised in other countries.
About Lantana Camara

- Lantana Camara is a flowering plant species belonging to the verbena family.
- Native to: It is native to the American tropics.
- It was introduced to India as an ornamental plant by the European colonisers in the early 1800s.
- Due to its capability to adapt to shifting climates, lantana can withstand high temperatures and moisture levels.
- However it is among the world’s ten worst invasive species and is of great concern in India.
- The shrub can easily spread across the forest floor, climb trees as a creeper, and entangle with other native plants.
- The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in the Western Ghats is heavily impacted by the invasion of Lantana camara, making it one of the largest affected areas.
