News:A farmer Scientist from Gujarat has been awarded Padma Shri for developing Madhuban Gajar- a biofortified carrot variety.

  • Benefits: High yielding, Highest carotene content, Deep red color, long size and longer shelf life.

Additional Facts:

  • Biofortification:It is the process by which the nutritional quality of food crops is improved through agronomic practices, conventional plant breeding, or modern biotechnology.
  • Food fortification:It is the deliberate addition of one or more micronutrients to food so as to correct or prevent a deficiency and provide a health benefit.
  • Difference:Biofortification differs from conventional fortification as biofortification aims to increase nutrient levels in crops during plant growth rather than through manual means during processing of the crops.
