Magnificent Mary: on making history at World Boxing Championships
News:
- Indian legendary boxer MC Mary Kom recently clinched her record-equalling sixth World Boxing Championship gold in New Delhi.
Important Facts:
- Mary Kom defeated Hanna Okhota of Ukraine 5-0 via unanimous decision in the 48kg category to win her sixth gold.
- Mary Kom’s other titles at the tournament came in 2002 (Antalya), 2005 (Podolsk), 2006 (New Delhi), 2008 (Ningbo City) and 2010 (Bridgetown).
- The elusive title not just made her the first women’s boxer to win six titles in the tournament, but she also equalled the record medal haul of Cuban legend Félix Savón, who ruled amateur boxing in the 1980s and 1990s.
- Mary Com also earlier this year won maiden Commonwealth Games gold medal.
- Now she is eyeing for the gold medal of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in 51 kg weight class.
- Mary Kom has never won an Olympic title, although she had bagged the bronze medal in 2012 in London in the flyweight category after losing to Great Britain’s Nicola Adams 6-11 in the semifinal.
- She had sought to claim her gold at Rio in 2016, but unfortunately failed to qualify for the event.
