- Eminent persons from various fields have filed an application in the Supreme Court against its order which examined the possibility of curbing advocates from speaking on pending cases.
- They have argued that the order is in violation of freedom of press under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution of India.
- The order came in the backdrop of Attorney General of India filing a contempt proceedings against Prashant Bhushan for tweeting wrong facts about government on an ongoing case which could mislead the court.
- Supreme Court had said that to protect the judiciary it would examine the possibility of imposing curbs on advocates giving press briefings on pending cases and judges who decide them.
- Court observed that advocates often share details of cases and attack judges on media.However,the code of conduct of judges does not allow them to defend themselves against criticisms on media,which maligns the judiciary.
