News: Project Himank of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has recently achieved a remarkable feat by constructing the world’s highest motorable road at Mig La Pass in Ladakh.
About Mig La Pass
- Location: Mig La Pass (also called Migla Pass) is located on the Changthang Plateau in Ladakh.
- It has become the highest motorable mountain pass in the world.
- Altitude: 19,400 feet (5,913 m)
- It is taller than both the South Base Camp of Mount Everest in Nepal (17,598 feet) and the North Base Camp in Tibet (16,900 feet).
- The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has laid a route across Mig La Pass.
- The road forms a crucial segment of the Likaru–Mig La–Fukche alignment.
- It connects the Hanle region to Fukche village, located close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
- This road construction was carried out under Project Himank.
- Strategic Significance :
- The Likaru–Mig La–Fukche connectivity holds immense strategic importance for India’s border infrastructure and national security.
- This corridor forms the third vital axis from the Hanle sector to the Indo-China border.
About Project Himank

- The project was started on 4 December 1985 at Leh with the objective of developing road communication across the Ladakh region.
- Executed by: Border Roads Organisation (BRO) under the Ministry of Defence.
- The personnel of this project have played a pivotal role in constructing and maintaining roads and airfields in some of the most challenging and inhospitable terrains.
- It ensures uninterrupted connectivity to strategic areas along the LAC with China and was instrumental in keeping the Leh–Manali and Zojila routes operational during Operation Vijay.
- This effort maintained vital supply lines and road communication to regions adjoining the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan.
