- A study titled “Deltas, Vulnerability and Climate Change: Migration and Adaptation (DECMA)” has stated that economic reasons are the major cause for migration in the Indian Bengal Delta. The Indian Bengal Delta comprises the Indian part of the trans-boundary Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna delta. It comprises of two districts viz. South 24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas of West Bengal.
- The study, DECMA, examined aspects of climate change, adaptation and migration in Ganga Brahmaputra Meghna Delta (India and Bangladesh) Volta (Ghana) and Mahanadi (India).
- The Volta delta is formed when the Volta river of Ghana drains into the Atlantic Ocean. The Mahanadi and Brahmani rivers in India together form the Mahanadi delta where they drain into Bay of Bengal
- The Ganges-Brahmaputra – Meghna delta spreads over of parts Bangladesh and Indian state of West Bengal. It is located where the Ganga, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers discharge into the Bay of Bengal. It the largest delta in the world.
- The study has pointed out that after economic reasons, social and environmental reasons like cyclones and flooding are the major causes for migration. Further, huge gender disparity- male migrants being more than female migrants.
