News: Prime Minister will visit Laos to attend the 21st ASEAN-India and the 19th East Asia Summit.

1. Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN): It is a regional intergovernmental organization comprising 10 Southeast Asian countries to promote political and economic cooperation and social stability among its member nations.

2. It was established in 1967 in Bangkok, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration by the 5-founding father.

3. ASEAN members- Brunei, Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam

4. East Asia Summit: It is a regional forum that brings together countries from South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia and beyond to discuss strategic, political and economic issues.

5. EAS was started in 2005. It comprises 18 countries- 10 ASEAN Countries + 8 Dialogue Partners.

6. India’s Act East Policy: It was launched by PM Modi in 2014, with the objective to promote economic cooperation, cultural ties and develop strategic relationships with counties in the Indo-Pacific region.

7. It is the successor to the Look East Policy of 1992 and focuses on the extended neighbourhood in the Indo-Pacific region, with ASEAN as its core.
