News: Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated the restored Muzhiyan Kulam at Pooranankuppam in Puducherry.
About Muzhiyan Kulam

- Location: The Muzhiyan Kulam is located near Thavalakuppam at Pooranankuppam in Puducherry.
- It is also known as Naangu Mozhi Kulam.
- Historical significance: It is a more-than-400-year-old historic pond and is believed to date back to the Pallava period.
- It employs the ‘Naangu Mozhi’ (four wells) rainwater management system, which links a main surface tank to four natural spring-fed wells through a network of underground chambers.
- It has traditionally served as a source of drinking water and irrigation for the village.
- Restored Kulam: The restored kulam now stores nearly 5 crore litres of water, recharges groundwater, and serves as a vital barrier against seawater intrusion. It is preserving both Puducherry’s heritage and its water security.
