- US President and North Korean leader are going to meet for a second summit in Vietnam.
- The first summit was held at Singapore where they had pledged to work towards the complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.
- The US administration is persuading North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons programme, which, combined with its missile capabilities, pose a threat to the United States before North Korea can expect any concessions.
- The North Korea wants (a) security guarantees for its current regime and (b) formal end of the 1950-1953 Korean War, which ended in a truce, not a treaty.Unlike a formal peace treaty, a truce is a legally non-binding document and a treaty would represent a symbolic end to the Korean War, which was halted only with an armistice.
