News: Ahilyanagar district of Maharashtra has secured the first rank in the country for conducting awareness activities under the eighth National Nutrition Fortnight campaign.

  • It is a two-week intensive outreach campaign conducted in April to strengthen community mobilisation and reinforce key nutrition behaviours under POSHAN Abhiyaan.
  • National Nutrition Fortnight Awareness Campaign is often referred to as the Poshan Pakhwada
  • It is a nationwide campaign focused on strengthening nutrition and early childhood development across the country.
  • Implementing agency: It is implemented by the Women and Child Development Department. 
  • This was the 8th edition of Poshan Pakhwada, held from 9th April to 23rd April 2026. 
    • Aim: It aimed to reinforce the government’s commitment to improving nutritional outcomes and promoting holistic development among children, particularly in their formative years.
    • Theme: The theme for this edition was “Maximising Brain Development in the First Six Years of Life”.
    • It highlights the critical importance of early childhood, particularly the first 1,000 days, in shaping cognitive growth, physical development, and overall well-being.
  • Key Focus Areas: The campaign focused on multiple aspects of early childhood care and nutrition, including:
    • Maternal and child nutrition, with emphasis on breastfeeding and complementary feeding
    • Early stimulation for children aged 0–3 years through responsive caregiving 
    • Play-based education for children aged 3–6 years to support school readiness
    • Reducing screen time among young children through community awareness
    • Strengthening Anganwadi centres with community participation and improved infrastructure
  • Activities conducted: During the fortnight, activities were conducted across states and Union Territories through Anganwadi centres, involving mothers, caregivers, and local communities.
    • These include Poshan Panchayats, awareness drives, early learning activities, and campaigns promoting healthy lifestyles.
  • Performance status: 
    • Ahilyanagar district of Maharashtra has secured the first rank in the country. The district has recorded a total of 324,075 activities so far.
    • Pune district has achieved the second position nationwide.
