National Statistical Commission:
Issue: Two remaining National Statistical Commission (NSC) members resigned
Grievances of NSC members are:
- NSC running at half strength and government moving very slowly on appointing new members
- NSC has been systematically bypassed in its functions with involvement of NITI Aayog
- No consultation with NSC before the release of back series GDP data
- Holding of NSC finalized current employment and unemployment data by Government
National Statistical Commission:
- NSC was constituted with a mandate to evolve policies, priorities and standards in statistical matters
- NSC was constituted on recommendations of the Rangarajan Commission which reviewed the Indian Statistical System in 2001
- NSC has four Members besides a Chairperson, each having specialization and experience in specified statistical fields
- Currently Niti Aayog CEO serves as an ex-officio member of NSC
