News: Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV), ‘Shruti’ was launched marking a significant milestone in Indian Navy’s pursuit towards indigenous shipbuilding
About NGOPV Shruti
- Yard 3037 (Shruti) is the second Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) of the four NGOPVs to be constructed as part of the Indian Navy’s 11-ship
- Yard 3039 (Sanghmitra) was the first NGOPV. It was launched in 2026.
- The ship has been named ‘Sanghmitra’ after the daughter of Emperor Ashoka.

- Named after: Shruti is named after India’s ancient civilisational heritage, specifically referring to the four Vedas.
- Build by: Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata
- Features:
- Design: The crest design of the ship depicts the constellation of Ursa Major and a red and white coloured light house.
- Size: They will be much larger and have greater endurance and firepower.
- These will be about 113 meters long and 14.6 meters wide, with a displacement of 3,000 tons.
- Speed: They will achieve speeds of up to 23 knots and have an endurance of 8,500 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 14 knots.
- Application: These indigenously designed and built ships will augment the existing vessels for multi-domain operations, such as maritime surveillance, search and rescue, protection of offshore assets, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) and anti-piracy missions.
