News: At the Mitigation Work Programme (MWP), India expressed displeasure over developed countries’ unserious discussion to support climate change action in developing nations.

1. Mitigation Work Programme (MWP) is a mechanism set up by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 2022 at COP 27 in Sharm el-Sheikh.

2. It aims to help the countries to scale up their mitigation targets and implementation to limit global warming to 1.5-degree celsius above pre-industrial levels.

3.The objectives of the MWP are to foster discussions to scale up mitigation targets, promote inclusive participation, address equity and sustainable development concerns.

4. The developed countries want the MWP to push for stronger and immediate action from all countries.

5. While the developing countries want that the MWP’s outcomes should be non-prescriptive, non-punitive, and respectful of national sovereignty and national circumstances.
