- The Election Commission of India(ECI) has recognized National People’s Party(NPP) as the eighth national party.NPP became the first regional party of the north-east to be accorded the status.
- NPP was given the national party status for fulfilling conditions such as polling more than 6% of the total votes in the last general election and being recognised as a State party in at least four States.
- The NPP is recognised as a State party in Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya and Nagaland.
- Currently,there are seven national parties in India namely (a)All India Trinamool Congress (b)BJP (c)BSP (c)CPI (d)Communist Party of India (Marxist) (e)Indian National Congress(INC) and (f)NCP.
- A party is recognised as a national party if any of the following conditions is fulfilled (a)If it secures 6% of valid votes polled in any four or more states at a general election to the Lok Sabha or to the legislative assembly and in addition if it wins four seats in the Lok Sabha from any state or states or (b)If it wins 2% of seats in the Lok Sabha at a general election and these candidates are elected from three states or (c)If it is recognised as a state party in four states.
- The recognition as a national party by EC determines their right to certain privileges like allocation of the party symbols, provision of time for political broadcasts on the state-owned television and radio stations and access to electoral rolls.
