Once big polluter, Badarpur plant to get eco-park revamp

News

The Badarpur Thermal Power Station (BTPS) is set to be converted to an ecological park

Important Facts:

  1. The ecological park will be built on 884.64 acres of fly ash pond within the premises of the thermal power station. The park is expected to be one of the world’s largest man-made parks
  2. Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) has been entrusted with building the ecological park.

Additional Information:

Fly Ash:

  • Fly ash is a by-product from burning pulverized coal in thermal power stations.
  • During combustion, mineral impurities in the coal (clay, feldspar, quartz, and shale) fuse in suspension and float out of the combustion chamber with the exhaust gases. As the fused material rises, it cools and solidifies into spherical glassy particles called fly ash.

It is a major component of the hazardous PM 2.5 (Fine particulate matter of diameter 2.5 micrometres or less than that) which is a major contributor to air pollution.
