Panna Tiger Reserve(PTR)

About PTR: 

  • Location– Vindhyan Hills in northern Madhya Pradesh.
  • It is spread over the Panna and Chhatarpur districts.
  • It is the 22nd Tiger Reserve of India(1994) and fifth in Madhya Pradesh .
  • The terrain here consists of extensive plateaus and gorges.
  • This reserve contains the last remaining tiger habitat of North Madhya Pradesh.

Significance: It is the northern most boundary of natural distribution to teak forests (Tectona grandis).

  • In east, it is surrounded by Teak-Kardhai mixed forest.
  • The reserve is also dotted with two thousand year-old rock paintings.

River– Flowing from the south to the north through the reserve is the River Ken and creates beautiful waterfalls on its way to the valley.

  • These forests along with Ken Gharial Sanctuary form a significant part of the catchment area of this river.

Climate: semi-Arid to Dry Sub-humid.

Fauna:

  • Tiger along with his fellow beings leopard , wild dog , wolf , hyaena and smaller cats.
  • Sloth bear has his most favourite home in the rock escarpments and undisturbed vales.
  • The wooded areas are dotted with sambar the largest of Indian deers, chital and chowsingha.

Vegetation– The dominating vegetation type is Miscellaneous Dry Deciduous forest interspread with grassland areas.

  • Other major forest types are riverines, open grasslands, open woodlands with tall grasses and thorny woodlands.
